Following many months of construction, the Town is thrilled to unveil that our full Lagoon Solar System is now operational as of May 2024. Originally approved by Council in February 2022, the total cost for the system was $1,426,682. The estimated yearly energy production is 1,575,000kWh.

Fast Facts:

• 1.08MW DC solar system
• It produces 107% of the total combined yearly consumption of the Lagoon aeration building and irrigation building, meaning the solar site produces more electricity per year than it consumes!
• Reduction of 770 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide emissions annually.
• Taber will generate carbon offsets from the system for a minimum of 8 years and the project is expected to generate an estimated $285,000

The fencing along the Magrath Estates neighbourhood needed some maintenance and care, so Town Parks & Recreation Staff completed the repairs in July.

Quick Facts:

• 1,500 feet of fence along the perimeter of Magrath Estates was repaired and stained; 
• 490 hours of staff time to complete;
• $11,000 in materials and equipment time;
• This project has extended the life of the fence and avoided approximately $200,000 of replacement expenses to the Town
• This fence was upgraded by the Town because of a development agreement that states the Town is to take care of the portion located on municipal property

The southern raw water reservoir at our Water Treatment Plant was drained early in 2023 so we could remove sediment to improve water quality. We drained it by intaking water only from the south reservoir into our Water Treatment Plant, reducing the amount of water stored by the reservoir, and pumping the remainder into the northern reservoir. 

As of July, the sediment has been removed and the water has been turned back on to fill the reservoir again. Once the reservoir is refilled and the water levels equalized, we will be able to draw equally from both of our cleaned reservoirs once more.

• It will take approximately 50 days to refill the reservoir to normal levels;
• The design capacity is 250,000 cubic metres of water;
• The northern reservoir was removed of sediment in 2022.

The Town is working to be well prepared for any future need for cemetery plots, and the components of Row K South are being installed in 2023. While this row will not be sold or in use for a number of years, the Town works to make sure we have enough space for cemetery burials for the community's needs for years to come.

  • Continuous concrete pour (the concrete monuments sit upon in the newer sections of the cemetery);
  • Irrigation lines;
  • Grass seed
• This completes the entirety of Row K, as the northern section was completed a few years ago.

With thousands of kilometers of roads to maintain within our municipal boundaries, there's always roadwork to take care of in Taber. Each summer our staff work to fix various roads, patch sections of streets, paint lines, fix potholes, and more.

Due to the wear and tear on the walking trail surrounding the Taber Golf Course, it was deemed time for the Town to give the trail a new overlay. In July the walkway was closed for just over one week for the pathway to be repaired.

One of our cemetery staff's most-asked questions has always been "do you have an online way to search for who is interred in the Taber Memorial Gardens?" Thanks to a years' worth of effort on the part of our Cemetery Staff, the Town launched our online, searchable database which includes directions to a loved-one's gravesite.

• Our database includes all records of burials dating back to the early 1900s (unless requested to remain private by the family);
• The database has mapping that shows where a grave can be located

The Trout Pond has been receiving a number of upgrades over the years, and 2023 saw the installation of a playground! Opened officially in May, this playground features a nautical theme with a few accessibility features. The playground is located directly between the pond and the campground, making it a perfect place for families to pass the time.

Beaches are for everyone, or at least that's what the Town believes! Installation on an accessible concrete pad at the Trout Pond beach took place in late April 2023 to allow visitors of all abilities the opportunity to enjoy being close to the water at the Trout Pond, access the boat launch/fishing dock, and traverse the entire length of the area (from the parking lot, to the walkway, to the beach).
