The Town of Taber is committed to enhancing community safety and accessibility. In response to concerns about insufficient lighting, Council has approved a phased plan to improve streetlighting throughout town. This initiative aims to create safer, more welcoming spaces for residents and visitors, while balancing the costs associated with new lighting infrastructure.

How it Will Work

Council approved a budget allotment to be placed in every budget starting in 2025 to add more streetlights in Taber. The areas identified as being the most dark will be the areas first upgraded.

Approximate Annual Cost: $85,000 (see breakdown below)

Blocks Upgraded Per Year: 5 blocks (minimum)

Cost Breakdown Per Year
  • Infrastructure Costs: $15,000/block (about 3 additional light poles per block) X 5 blocks per year= $75,000
  • Power Costs: $105/month for (approx) 3 lights per block = $1,260 X 5 blocks = $6,300
    • Total Cost: $81,300/ year
      • Other Variable Costs: Tree Trimming ($300/tree); Tree removal & replanting ($2,000/tree)
